I gave birth in an ambulance

Victoria gave birth to her first child in the back of an ambulance on the way to hospital, using only her MamaTENS my time maternity TENS machine for pain relief.

Victoria and her husband Paul attended antenatal classes at their local family practice in London. During classes they were told about the various forms of pain relief available to them during labour including epidural, gas and air and TENS. Paul decided to research, via the internet, the best labour TENS machine on the market. His search concluded that MamaTENS was the best, but offered a choice of two machines the MamaTENS and the MamaTENS my time. “We opted for the my time because it had the additional feature of labour log and were sure from our research that we were making the right decision to hire a MamaTENS” said Victoria.

“I started labour on the Sunday night and began using the TENS machine straight away. I found the controls easy-to-use and was able to increase the pain relief as the contractions became more intense by changing the pre-set programmes and by using the built-in boost button” she said.

Victoria was assessed by a midwife at home after only a few hours and as she was already fully dilated it was determined a home birth was the best option at that stage. As a second midwife was unable to make it to the house on time paramedics were called to attend. After a few more hours of labour the baby’s head was stuck and its heart rate dropped so the decision was made to rush to the hospital. However, the excitement of coming down the stairs and getting into the ambulance was clearly too much for baby Emilia who decided to make an appearance in the ambulance, much to the surprise of mum and dad. She was born in the early hours of Monday morning a healthy 7lb 13oz.

Whilst all of this was going on, Victoria was still wearing her TENS machine. She’d had it on for the entire 6 hours of her labour and had required no additional form of pain relief. “It was amazing, I didn’t think that I could go through the whole of my labour without any form of medical intervention, but I did thanks to the MamaTENS my time which provided me with an excellent level of pain relief and a much needed distraction” she comments.

The MamaTENS my time is the only maternity TENS on the market with the ability to monitor contraction times and length of time in labour. It also offers additional levels of pain relief, using comfort strength control. So there is no need to have your birthing partner monitoring these times on a stopwatch. It’s all integral to the TENS machine.

The MamaTENS my time increases intensity in tiny steps providing smooth comfort control to stimulate the body’s natural defences for effective, drug-free pain relief during labour. Its preset programmes enable mum-to-be to stay mobile, in control and relaxed, before, during and post birth. Another unique feature of the machine is the intelligent power ramp; as long as the button is depressed the strength continues to increase beyond normal settings to action the third pain relief mechanism ‘brief intense TENS’ to help counter extreme pain.

In addition, the MamaTENS my time has a one touch memory programme, so for example if a labouring mum decides to take a bath during labour to help relax and ease the pain, when she re-applies the machine afterwards it will automatically remember the last programme she was using and return to 50% of the intensity set.
