Choking: Would you know what to do?

As a first time mum you soon discover that once your child can crawl they are into everything and putting everything into their mouths learning about their world around them. Only trouble is you’re looking down on the world they are looking at daily and you can’t always see the things that they can so easily pop into their mouths.

Research carried out by the Department of Trade and Industry on choking risks to children highlighted that 51% of choking incidents involving children under the age of four in the UK were due to food, 32% were non food items, 6% were toys or parts of toys and 11% of objects were unknown.

So if faced with a situation where your child has picked up and swallowed an object, would you as a mum know what to do? I know personally, I would hesitate if faced with this situation and would appreciate simple step-by-step instructions for re-assurance. Knowledge of simple first aid can save a child’s life in the event of a choking incident. If you’re not sure what to do, then the Indicare™ portable first aid guides could be just what you need. These small concertina guides can be attached to your purse, changing bag, buggy or key-ring so that they are always on hand, should you need them.

There are two guides, one designed for infants to 1 year of age and one for children from 1 year plus. Both guides use minimal text in easy to follow steps showing you how to dislodge the offending object. In addition, the guides provide concise instructions on rescue breaths and chest compressions.

Indicare™ emergency first aid guides can be purchased from MamaTENS for £3.50 for either the infant or child guide or together for £7.50.
